I am a writer and artist based in New York City. I work with flowers primarily across two media with centuries-old histories - botanical illustration and ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging. The inevitable irony and regret that comes from working with flowers (a decaying subject) are thrown into relief by the time-intensive nature of both practices. Despite the challenge of working with subjects that are fading with each moment, I find that exploring the beauty of individual flowers through illustration and ikebana to give me a unique sense of meditative joy. My hope is that people discover the subjects that I depict with the same feeling of exultation and recognition that I feel when I work with them in real life.
